3 Steps to Starting Your Semicrunchyish Journey
This post was developed in partnership with Tom’s of Maine. All opinions are my own.
When we had our first daughter, our entire world changed. It’s how we started our semicrunchyish journey in which we make small changes throughout our lives as we can to better, not only our lives, but our environment as well. What we put on and in our bodies, what products we use that will be washed into the drain or soaked into the ground, they all matter greatly.
The 3 Steps to Starting Your Semicrunchyish Journey that we recommend are:
- Changing what you eat
- Changing your chemical laden house and outdoor products
- Changing your body products
The first step that we made was changing our eating habits. This really kicked into gear once our first got old enough to eat. She wanted everything we had, but we didn’t want her having everything we had. We had to make the changes so we were all eating healthy. If I didn’t want it in her body, then we shouldn’t be putting it in our bodies either. For the most part, we eat minimal processed foods now, we look closely at ingredient lists and have a list of things that we won’t consume. For example, we make a lot of our own sauces and we won’t eat anything with high fructose corn syrup in it. We call it our “semicrunchyish” journey though because there are moments where we still catch ourselves picking out old habit foods (Nutella is just so good). We almost always immediately regret it.
Our second step was even easier. Remove all the chemical cleaners and products that we used in and out of the house. For use, we swapped a lot of household cleaners with DIY home cleaners using essential oils, vinegar, and acid like lemons. Outside, we won’t use commercial weed killers, we plant things that promote environmental growth like butterfly bushes, and we compost all that we can.
Step three has been the hardest and we are still working on this one the most. Working to change the products we use on our bodies. This includes soaps, toothpaste, deodorant, perfumes, make-ups, and more. I personally think there’s two big reasons this is the hardest step.
- The ingredients are often hard to decipher versus food ingredients
- We often have specific body products we love that we aren’t willing to give up
These two things are a recipe for a lot of stubbornness, but I’m here to tell you it’s possible. We have slowly been changing all the products we use. We’ve changed the girls’ hair products, our soap products, and most recently our deodorant.
We were recently given the opportunity to try out Tom’s of Maine natural, no aluminum deodorant and I’m thrilled with the results. Andrew is too. It’s one less thing we have to worry about now. Tom’s of Maine works for a more naturally effective way to care for yourself and your family. We’ve been using their fluoride-free toothpaste for awhile now, but deodorant was always something I was scared to switch. No one wants to be stinky! Their new deodorant formula is free of aluminum, artificial fragrances and petrochemicals, so I decided it was time to try!
It has clinically proven, 24-hour odor protection and comes in fully recyclable packaging. They also don’t test on animals and gives 10% of profits back to helping people and the planet.
While we need to keep searching for switches for other products, I’m happy that we’ve made the DeoSwitch now!
