The first time I remember learning about being prepared was the blizzard of 1996. I was 10 years old at the time and remember being sent home with weeks worth of school work and my parents making sure that we were stocked up on “essentials” just in case we didn’t have power. The next time, I was a bit older. I was in 9th grade and Y2K was coming. While I still didn’t understand fully a parents’ worry, I do remember my father setting up containers with non-perishable foods, cases of bottled and jugs of water, batteries, flashlights, and so much more. Luckily, for us, nothing horrible happened in either of those situations. We were out of school for two weeks during the ’96 blizzard, but we had power. Growing up in West Virginia, we didn’t really have anything else to worry about.
Fast forward approximately 15 years, and now here I am living in New Jersey. I remember vividly Hurricane Sandy. Andrew and I, no kids yet, living in an apartment and naturally the winds and rains were enough to scare anyone, even though we were 45 minutes from the shore. We moved our mattress into our living room that night and were preparing to go into our walk-in pantry closet if necessary. We were fortunate again, to never loose power in that case either.
But now, we have children. Two beautiful, little girls to be exact. And I now understand what my dad wanted to be prepared all those years ago. There’s nothing more frightening than not being prepared to take care of your children when an emergency happens in the moment. Luckily, we teamed up with Philly Social Media Moms to find the solution to our problem.
Insert Live Prepared.
As parents, we all want to be prepared, but it’s always something that we push off until the very last minute. By the time we remember, ninety percent of the bread and milk are taken off the shelves and we are struggling walking down the aisles trying to figure out what we can grab. Live Prepared has all our procrastination issues solved.
In a nationwide consumer survey, 50% of people don’t know where to start with preparing for a disaster. The American Red Cross tells families to have enough food and water on hand for a two week period. Instead of having to worry about canned goods, you can just grab a Live Prepared kit and save time and money! Live Prepared’s 72-Hour Emergency Home Kits give you what you need to make sure you and your family are comfortable, well-fed and safe. Live Prepared focuses on providing high-quality food with nutritional calories that you need to keep going, while being shelf-stable for 20 years! Yes, 20 years! While I, personally, have started canning goods as a way to be more sustainable, even I can’t make that food last 20 years!
- water bottle filtration unit
- Solar powered radio (with flashlight!)
- 8-in-1 flashlight tool and
- cooking kit with utensils included
One of the other great features is that everything in the kit fits inside the included backpack. Including the boxes that everything comes inside. While it may seem weird to want to include the boxes, I was thinking this would be great addition for having fire material. We have started a small area in a closet to keep all our emergency materials. I feel amazing now knowing that I have started the process of being prepared and that it was amazingly easy with Live Prepared.
