Grain Free Pancakes: Perfect for Baby

August 30, 2013 by Larisha Campbell 43 Comments

We have been doing Baby-Led Weaning ever since Baby Skibbles was ready to eat solid foods (6 months is the recommended age according to the AAp, WHO, & CDC). because we had done out research we knew there were some things she shouldn’t have and things she should be limited to having. One of those being grains. The problem is, this mama right here loves carbs and I wanted some pancakes. I remember someone telling me to mash a banana and add eggs but I thought they were crazy; however, desperate times call for desperate measures, so I decided to give it a shot!
Start by mushing completely one whole banana. Next, add in two eggs with yolks and beat them with the banana until you have a liquid-y batter. Finally, add a teaspoon of cinnamon into the batter.
Next drop spoonfuls onto a greased (we use coconut oil) skillet. When I say spoonfuls, think small Micky Mouse pancakes or silver dollar pancakes as I’ve seen them called. There is nothing really binding these together so they are much harder to flip than a normal pancakes. About 2 minutes on each side.
Cut them up and serve! That’s it! Baby Skibbles loved every minute of it! I must admit I ate them too and they are really sweet, but amazingly yummy! Give it a try!

Interesting. We are BLW too, and I have never heard no grains. I have heard no eggs (at least yolks) until 1 year though.

I've heard only certain grains at specific ages. I guess every pediatrician has different guidelines she follows. Mine also says no egg whites until a year so one of our favorite breakfasts is an egg-yolk omelette with shredded veggies in it.

    Hi ladies :)
Some doctors recommend no egg whites before a year because it is high on the allergen list. However, if there is no family history of allergies there's not a reason not too.

***I'm not a medical professional; please contact your pediatrician for medical advice.

Robin–our girl loves raspberries and yogurt too!

Yum! Looks good! How old was your little one when you made the pancakes? Our little one has always wanted finger foods and really never took to eating anything puree, so we are always looking for new foods to try!

She was 8 months the first time, but if you are not concerned about egg allergies, there is no reason not to give anytime after starting solids when you are ready! We had eggs around 7 1/2 months 😉 (we started solids at 6 months)

I make these all the time for our whole family (we eat Paleo and call them Paleo Pancakes). I use one banana, one egg, and one tablespoon of almond butter per serving. They flip easier if you wait until they are REALLY cooked on that first side and use really ripe bananas. 🙂

My daughter has also said she wishes to try baby led weaning (as a NICU nurse I was well versed on baby led latch so I figured OK we'll give it a try ) we have a couple of months yet so I have been reading and was glad to find your blog!! I have my doubts as you did but perhaps he will be eating these banana pancakes for thanksgiving although we usually have pumpkin pancakes for breakfast on

This is great. I'll probably avoid eggs until at least 1, just because my first child has multiple serious food allergies, including milk.

What a wonderful recipe. I hope to be able to make this one day. Right now though both my daughters get terrible constipation when they eat bananas. So as of right now we have boycotted bananas in the house.

I had a friend make these once and she said that she felt that they were just caramelized/fried bananas. The kids didnt like them either so it was the first and last time she made them. Do you think she did something wrong? I mean it's kinda hard to mess up a 2 ingredient recipe but who knows. I havent tried them because of her experience making them.

Hmm, I'm not sure what she could have done, but I wouldn't say these were like that at all! Definitely more than just a fried banana! With only two ingredients, I say try for yourself, you really can't go wrong!
