Washington Lake Park Wine Festival 2014- Sip Into Summer

June 22, 2014 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

We had never been to a wine festival before and had no idea what to expect.  Our friends had recently been telling us to try one because we couldn’t find a great red wine that we both loved.  Andrew and I have had completely different tastes, with neither of us, truly loving wines that we try.  We know that wine is an acquired taste and apparently we haven’t acquired it yet. So needless to say we were a little hesitant to even go to a wine festival.

But, luckily we did.

We were invited to the 2nd Annual Washington Lake Park from our friends at Giggles, Gobbles, and Gulps and we are tremendously thankful for the invite.  It’s right down the street from our house and we never knew about this amazing park.  Skibbles had a ton of fun just being able to run around.  There was tons of amazing food vendors, live music, kids activities – like a bounce house – and so much more.
We arrived at the check-in gate and got our bands, keepsake wine tasting glasses, wine tasting sheet, and then we were off. The wine sheet really came in handy. It listed each of the 18 wineries, which wines were being sampled at their tent, and the price of each bottle.  It was both amazing, and overwhelming.  Having never been to a wine festival before, seeing so many options was like WHOA.  We knew we were there to taste red wines, but we didn’t know much else.
We needed some sort of game plan because we knew we wouldn’t be sampling all 300 wines.  Yes, 300!  Actually there are over 300 wines to sample. So we decided a red wine from each, along with a fruit wine, Moscato, or sangria depending on each winery’s offerings.  Neither of us had ever had Moscato or Sangria – I know, I know, how have we been living without them – but they were also recommended to us, so that was our game plan.

We tasted so many amazing wines. And…some..that we didn’t so much like. But being able to sample them without purchasing an entire bottle only to find out we don’t like it, is amazing. The people were friendly, helpful, and the lines weren’t that long.  They made some great recommendations for us to try.  It was a beautiful day and the entire family had an absolute blast!

It’s truly an all day family affair.  We were able to try some amazing dessert from Waffle de Lys. Ice cream on top of an actual Belgian waffle with Nutella and strawberries is what I chose, but there are a ton of topping options. It was the perfect treat to top off an incredible afternoon.

I know you’re wondering what are absolute favorite were.  We were so amazed about just how great the Sangria and Moscato were that we chose to get them right away.  From Tomasello Winery we got the Red Raspberry Moscato.  We actually had a difficult time deciding between this one and the cranberry but either of them are amazing choices. The Red Raspberry Moscato is a blend of both red raspberry and moscato wines that together make a decedent combinations of fruity flavors. From Renault Winery we got their Sangria, a full-bodied red wine bursting with citrus fruit aroma and taste. And lastly, we got the Sangria from Plagido’s Winery, a sweet combination of grape wine with pineapple juice added.  This last one was actually our favorite that we tried, and comes in either two bottles that you mix together or a bag that is ready to pour.

There are a ton of amazing vendors there as well, most with quirky and fun spins of wine corks and wine bottle recreations, but we were in heaven when we saw Hank Sauce.  It’s hands down one of the best hot sauces we’ve ever tried, so we had to grab a bottle.

We actually forget to buy one of our favorites.  The Ceci Bella Acai Raspberry Cabernet from Cava Winery. It’s a well-constructed wine with berries and a mellow Cabernet that had us both in love.  Luckily, we found a store that carries it right down the street!

We found the perfect red for both of us and we learned that we both enjoy sweet, dessert style wines.  We hope that eventually we can enjoy more styles of wines, but love the ability to try so many and find our style at the Washington Lake Park Wine Festival!  We recommend everyone going when they can!

So grab your tent, blanket, chairs, and get your tastebuds ready to sip into summer with amazingness.
