Letote Subscription Box Review

September 12, 2014 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

*Disclosure: We received the product(s) discussed in this post free of charge. Thoughts and opinions are 100% ours. Affiliate links may be contained in this post. We receive a small commission for purchases and thank you for helping us continue to run our site.

Subscription boxes are all the buzz right now! And I recently got to see what the hype was all about with Le Tote! Le Tote is a personal styled subscription service that let’s you get your hands on the hottest trends and see if it’s a good look for you before purchasing.

So how does it work?  Le Tote gives you option between two subscription boxes.  One is a Jewelry Box for $19/month and the other is a Boutique Box that provides both clothing and jewelry for $49/month.   After you pick your subscription you then shop, add things to your cart, wear it, decide if you want to purchase, and return what you don’t want, get a new box, and repeat.  That’s it!

What I love:

  • There’s no commitments ever.  You can even put your account on hold from month to month.
  • There’s unlimited number of totes a month
  • Free Shipping Both Ways
  • Rating System for Totes so the stylists know what fits, what doesn’t, what you love, and what you don’t
  • No Need to Wash
  • Option to add insurance and upgrade for a personal stylist

I’ll be honest.  I’m one of the least fashionable people in the world.  I’ve just never had a knack for anything relating to fashion, let alone high fashion.  So this really gave me the opportunity to test out new outfits that I probably would have never purchased before.  I fell in love with these high waisted skirts and really had fun trying out the items.  There were quite a few pieces that I didn’t like and I loved just being able to send them back without worrying about purchasing them.  Andrew has said that my style has increased since working with Le Tote and that’s always a positive thing.   Being in the blogging world, I’m invited to a lot of events and my wardrobe is not set up for them at all, so having a subscription box, let’s me always have a new outfit for every event.

Leave me a comment and let me know when style below you prefer!

The jewelry is equally as fun.  There were so many pieces that I was sent that I would have never even looked at in a store. And it was fun wearing them and getting to really explore with my style.

Le Tote is absolutely great.  My only personal downfall is that some of the prices are more than I would typically be willing to spend for actually purchasing the items.  They are very on par with boutique pricing, but still offer a discount from that.  What’s better though is that for every friend you refer who tries Le Tote, you get $25 to spend!  That can really add up!   If you are constantly on the go and don’t have a lot of time to shop, the Le Tote subscription is the perfect idea for you!

Out and About with JJ Cole Collections

September 11, 2014 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

*Disclosure: We received the product(s) discussed in this post free of charge. Thoughts and opinions are 100% ours. Affiliate links may be contained in this post. We receive a small commission for purchases and thank you for helping us continue to run our site.

I recently had the chance to attend Blogger Bash, a blogging conference, with multiple events going on simultaneously. It was an amazing experience for me and one of my favorite parts was the Baby Palooza event.  It was there that I was introduced to some of the newest JJ Cole products.  I knew about JJ Cole before this event, but not very well, and primarily only knew about their accessories.  I was blown away by the backpack diaper bag (I geeked over it a bit), the Agility baby carrier, and the Broadway stroller.

During this part of the Blogger Bash event, we were supposed to tweet out of favorite item at each vendor for a chance to win. I must have geeked out about the JJ Cole diaper bag a little much, because the rep gave me the diaper bag to take home before they even started giving out prizes. Then, crazy enough, I actually ended up winning the entire JJ Cole collection. My friends and I were a bit nervous about getting everything back in the Kia Soul we were driving, but it amazingly fit right into the back of this small trunk.  I was amazed at the ability to shrink down.

It was late when I got home, so the next morning I had taken it out and before I could even try to figure it out Skibbles jumped right inside.  It was so funny and Andrew spent the next 20 minutes spinning her around in a circle.  She was in love with it!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been able to get out and about with our new JJ Cole products and had an absolutely amazing time with learning everything about them.  We have headed out to multiple places with the JJ Cole backpack diaper bag and time after time I’m shocked at how much I can fit inside this bag.  There are over 10 pockets for ultimate organization, including zippered pouches.  The design shown here is the gray floret and it comes in 3 additional colors for just $79.95.  This is less than 1/2 the price than other brand named backpack diaper bags I’ve looked at and the quality is incredible.  Skibbles has even dabbled at hiding stuff inside of it for me to find later! 🙂

Part of the collection we received included the JJ Cole Outdoor Blanket in gray/red.  The price point starts at $34.95 for 5×5, and there is also a 5×7 option as well. When we recently made plans to head down to the shore (aka the beach), we knew the blanket had to go with us.  It was one of the best things we have ever had there.  It’s water-resistant and super easy to wipe down and get all the sand off.   It even folds back up in itself with a detachable strap that allows for easy carrying.

The JJ Cole Broadway Stroller. For me, this is one of the best strollers, I’ve gotten my hands on so far.  It retails for $450, but it’s, in my opinion, a game changer.  It easily converts from a bassinet to a toddler with WITHOUT any switching seats.  It’s an all in one system with adjustable handle height, multiple positions, great maneuverability, and great folding size.  It also has six other color canopies available (sold separately!).  Here’s some more features:

• easily converts from bassinet mode to a toddler seat
• converts from forward to parent facing with one quick spin
• large lower storage basket
• easy, one-hand fold
• removable bumper bar
• infant car seat adapter also included
• for use from birth to 50 lbs
• one year limited warranty

We took the Broadway to the beach, the zoo, and many other places this summer and it’s been with us trekking through every step.  It did great moving across the sand, through dirt, gravel, and road. There wasn’t a moment that we had an issue with it.  We also loved that the backpack diaper bag came with that attach it right to the stroller handle, freeing up even more space in the basket below.  Skibbles seemed so comfortable inside and even fell asleep on occasion!

We also got some time in with the JJ Cole Agility Baby Carrier.  It’s cotton material is extremely comfortable and provides great back support with a full back panel.  It’s extremely easy to use.  It retails for just $39.95, comes in black or gray, and is designed to hold babies from 8-35lbs.  Skibbles is just around 25lbs and I wouldn’t leave her in here very long, but it’s definitely great for quick trips and on the go. We also were able to test out the JJ Cole Diaper Changing Clutch and theBottle Cooler, both of which are great.  Skibbles doesn’t take bottles, but it easily kept her sippy cup and refrigerated snacks cold for hours more than they would have been otherwise.

We’ve had an absolutely amazing few weeks with all of our JJ Cole products and we can’t wait to continue to go out and about and see what adventures we take next .

Mamma Chia Squeeze Pouch and Beverage Review #MammaChiaMagic

September 10, 2014 by Larisha Campbell 1 Comment

“This review and giveaway was made possible by Double Duty Divas and . I was compensated for my participation in this campaign, but all opinions are 100% mine.”
If you’ve been following along here for the past year, you know that we are on a mission to eat better everyday.  Chia, though, has been one thing I’m just not sure about.  I was recently given the opportunity to try chia drinks and squeeze pouches made from Mamma Chia.  I decided it’s better to try than not, so I gave it a go.

I received both an assortment of the squeeze pouches, as well as coupons to purchase the Vitality beverages.  I was able to find a local store that carried the Blackberry Hibiscus beverage.  When I got home, I opened the bottle and I’ll admit, it looks a bit off, but the taste is amazing.  The texture is definitely something that I wasn’t sure of at first in both the beverage and the squeeze pouches, but after a few sips you get used to it.  In my mind I compared it to blended up fresh berries where you still eat the seeds in them.  After I thought of it that way, I was good to go!  The Vitality Beverage comes in the following flavors:
  • Blackberry Hibiscus
  • Cherry Lime
  • Coconut Mango
  • Cranberry Lemonade
  • Guava Mamma
  • Pineapple Coconut
  • Pomegranate Mint
  • Raspberry Passion
  • Strawberry Lemonade
So why Chia?  Chia is packed full of brain and heart healthy Omega-3.  The vitality beverage has 2500mg!  It’s also packed with powerful antioxidants and dietary fibers, and many more amazing vitamins and nutrients to aid in a healthier you!  Plus, all Mamma Chia products are Non-GMO, Organic, Vegan, and Gluten Free.

The Chia Squeeze pouches come in the following flavors:

  • Strawberry Banana
  • Green magic
  • Apple Cinnamon
  • Blackberry Bliss
  • Mango Coconut
  • Wild Raspberry
The beverage vs the squeeze has roughly the same texture, but the squeeze is thicker.  The taste of them is amazing though.  We recently packed some in our lunch and I loved the taste of the Mango Coconut one.  And so did Skibbles.  I have a hard time getting her to eat a lot of food, so knowing she’s getting so many vitamins and nutrients at once, it’s great to me.  They’re also the perfect, healthy option to throw into lunch bags for back to school, work, or picnic ideas!

Please Touch Museum – Olivia the Pig Story Time Meet & Greet

September 9, 2014 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

*Disclosure: We received the admission for free in exchange for this post.  Thoughts and opinions 100% our own.
We were recently invited to attend the Olivia the Pig StoryTime Meet & Greet at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, PA.  We had been to the Please Touch Museum once before on our own accord when Skibbles was much younger, but not since she was as mobile as she is now.  We were so excited to have the opportunity to go back again.

We got there are loved having an awesome place to take our picture outside.  I’m big on wanting to capture memories of where we take Skibbles so she can look back on it when she’s older and know. We got our tickets and walked inside the museum.   Memorial Hall is absolutely stunning.  It was originally designed as an art museum and the architectural structure of the building is incredible.

About Please Touch MuseumSince 1976, Please Touch Museum has been the Children’s Museum of Philadelphia. Our museum was the first in the nation whose target audience was families with children seven and younger. We have grown into one of the best children’s museums in the nation, have become experts in play and have had our programs for under served families in the region nationally recognized. Our mission to enrich the lives of children by creating learning opportunities through play, enables us to lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning and cultural awareness.

We started on the first floor.  You could easily spend an entire day just on the first floor.  The museum itself is HUGE.  Exhibits on this floor include:
  • Flight Fantasy
  • Roadside Attractions
  • River Attractions
  • Liberty Arm and Torch
  • Art Program Room
I absolutely love how everything in set up in stages and can completely be used as a homeschooling tool for parents wanting to teach about certain things.  Skibbles had a blast in the automative area where she was able to really get under the hood and test drive a car herself.  The space and science areas were a big hit too and in another year or two, I can see us spending a lot of time in there.
The River Attractions were by far, the favorite part of the entire morning.  Skibbles is obsessed with water and I actually had to pull her away from this after a long time so we could go see other things.  She kept wanting to go back, too.  Every child gets a blue waterproof vest so their clothes don’t get wet and there’s dryers in the areas for their hands afterwards.
Even though she wasn’t sure about it at first, she ended up loving the giant piano.  She looks so cute on it.
We were also able to ride the carousel. It’s an absolutely gorgeous carousel that was originally crafted in 1908! This is an additional charge from your tickets, but so worth the fun.  She was all smiles the entire time we were riding.
The Second Floor boasts:
  • Playhouse Theater
  • Wonderland
  • Centennial Exploration
  • City Capers
As you walk down into the second floor, you are taken into a transformation of Alice in Wonderland, complete with a spinning wheel that makes Alice look like she’s falling down.  Skibbles must have spent a good 3 minutes in a trance watching it.  I don’t know how she didn’t get dizzy!

There’s a play picnic area, play shoe store, play restaurant, play doctor’s office, and play grocery store set up on the lower level as well.

The play grocery store is absolutely adorable.  Kids are able to using shopping carts that are their size, shop the entire store, and then check out at registers that other kids can scan all their items through.  Afterwards, there’s a “home” set up where they can put all their groceries away.

Lastly, Skibbles has no real idea what the “Collections” are inside the Please Touch Museum, however, I’m mesmerized by every single one.  Inside these showcases, are collections of previous “hot toys” over the past few decades.  It was like reliving my childhood in little showcases all throughout the museum.  It was awesome.

We were originally there for story time with Olivia the Pig.  Please Touch Museum has a ton of activities and events going on that you can take advantage of when attending the museum.  After story time, children were allowed a meet and greet with Olivia.  Skibbles loved her and was so sad when we had to leave.  Our friends from Can’t Google Everything tried to let us hop back in a picture so she was happy again, but she was just upset at this point.  Luckily, there was so much fun to distract her!

Lastly, we check out the Please Touch Museum’s Lunch cafe. They had some many great options, from already prepared sandwiches, salads, and wraps, to customized pizzas, sandwiches, and pastas.  And the food was delicious and comparable in price to many other places.

We HIGHLY recommend Please Touch Museum as one of our top places to visit with kids in the Philadelphia area. Under one is free, and anyone else 1 and over, requires a ticket, priced at $17/person. Basic Family Membership is $150 for a family of four (pays for itself in just over two visits).

Why It Takes Me 3 Hours Longer to Clean Than You

September 7, 2014 by Larisha Campbell 1 Comment

*Disclosure: Affiliate links may be contained in this post. We receive a small commission for purchases and thank you for helping us continue to run our site.

A few months ago, Andrew made the mistake of asking what I did all day.  I really laid into him and I knew he felt bad after asking.  I honestly felt bad afterwards because I know I wasn’t very nice; however, the thought that he didn’t think I had done anything all day, really got under my skin. REALLY BAD.  Fast forward to this morning.

For once, I was up before anyone else in the house.  While I probably should have made a cup of hot chocolate and my breakfast and enjoyed the peace and quiet, I decided that I would clean.  I, myself, was amazed at how quickly I was getting everything done and then bam, Skibbles woke up.  The rest of the morning is clear why it takes me three times as long to clean as it does Andrew.

For starters, let’s just quickly look at what a Dad’s Cleaning List would look like…

Now, let’s look at Mom’s Cleaning List…

Now let’s take a look at this morning.

6:35am – Woke up.  Came downstairs. Started washing machine.  Got cleaning supplies.  Cleaned Wiped down the powder room sink and mirrors.  Cleaned toilet.  Swept and mopped powder room floor.  Swept and mopped bathroom hallway.  Cleaned all family room windows and window seals. Wiped down fire place and mantel.  Move couch and rug – sweep and mop.   All this 10 minutes.
6:45am–  Toddler wakes up.  Change diaper.
6:53am- Make Andrew and Skibbles breakfast.
6:57am- Grab the vacuum to clean the rug.
6:58am– Andrew asks for more to drink because Skibbles drank all his drink
7:00am- Move, sweep, and mop behind both chairs.
7:05am- Stop cleaning to make Andrew’s lunch for work
7:10am- Plug in the vacuum.
7:11am- Skibbles wants a drink
7:12am- Stop Skibbles from running outside while Andrew is trying to get out the door for work.
7:16am- Skibbles wants a banana.
7:18am- Turn on the vacuum. Vacuum Rug.
7:21am- Wrap up cord to put vacuum away.
7:23am- Skibbles spits out the last part of the banana all over the clean rug. Clean up banana.
7:26am- Finish sweeping the last part of the family room floor.
7:27am- Grab Skibbles from climbing.
7:28am- Finish sweeping the last part of the floor.
7:29am- Grab Skibbles from climbing.
7:30am- Start to mop the last part of the floor.
7:31am- Grab Skibbles from climbing.
7:32am- Finish mopping the last part of the floor.
7:33am- Grab Skibbles from climbing.

It took me approximately an hour to vacuum a rug, move two chairs, and sweep and mop an approximately 15 square foot area.  AN HOUR!  Now we will repeat this while I’m cleaning up the entryway, kitchen, and any other room I try to clean up this morning. And he wonders why it looks like I haven’t done anything.  And let’s not even talk about what happens when I attempt to clean up the toys.  It’s like a free for all clean slate for the toddler to think that every toy must be immediately be brought back out.  Oy vey.

#BabyGotMoves Thanks To Pampers Diapers + Giveaway

September 5, 2014 by Larisha Campbell 20 Comments

*This review was made possible by Double Duty Divas and Pampers. I was provided the featured product free of charge to facilitate my review, but all opinions are 100% mine.”

One of the happiest things in the entire world is my baby girl dancing.  It brings an instant smile to my face.  She has this absolutely hysterical 2-step dance that she does where she almost looks like she is trying to gallop.  She does it every single time she tries to dance.  That and the “booty pop” are the only baby moves she has, but I still laugh every single time.

What’s even better is that when she’s dancing and has a dry diaper. Pampers makes that happen.  As most of you know, we primarily cloth diaper; however, we recently went through some issues with our cloth diapers leaking and a frustrated overworked mom needed a better solution until I figured it out.  Pampers was there for us every step of the way.  Through all the dancing and fun!   That makes a happy baby and a happy family!

Want to see Skibble’s dance moves?  Just check them out here, it’s guaranteed to make you “Happy!”

Cascade Platinum Shining Review In-Home Part + Giveaway #CascadeShiningReviews

September 5, 2014 by Larisha Campbell 12 Comments

*Disclosure: “This review was made possible by Double Duty Divas and Cascade. I was provided the featured product free of charge as well as compensation to host the party to facilitate my review, but all opinions are 100% mine.”

When I was accepted into the , I was super excited to be hosting my second in-home product party last week, along with actually demoing the product live.  We will be hosting another party later this mother with other bloggers, but last week I had the opportunity to host just my “mommy friends” over. And, I have to admit, I was a bit nervous.
With bloggers, we all know there is a chance that something might go awry.  But with mommy friends here, there was no fooling anyone.  I had nightmares that I was going to open the dishwasher and everything still be there.  But we had to get the show started!

One thing I was most excited about was that every friend that came would actually get to go home with the products and test them out themselves.  My friends always comment how they would love to be able to work with some of the companies I do and this put that opportunity right in their hands!

We got everything set up for our friends with the samples, drinks, and kid friendly foods!
As part of the campaign, we were required to make brownies and macaroni and cheese.  I set them up and was ready for our friends to start arriving.

We put the Rinse Aid in, as well as the Cascade platinum pack. We left the brownie pan sitting out overnight with NO pre-soaking! And put it right in the dishwasher as you see below.

My dishwasher takes forever, so while we were waiting for that to finish, the kids all played.  And by played I mean just ran around screaming while throwing out every single toy that we have in our house.

Test time came to an end and I pulled out the brownie pan!  SPOTLESS!  Not even a streak!  I was absolutely amazed and so were the others.  Can you believe how clean that is!

15 Things I Didn’t Know About Car Seat Safety Before Having A Child

September 2, 2014 by Larisha Campbell 1 Comment

*Disclosure: Affiliate links may be contained in this post. We receive a small commission for purchases and thank you for helping us continue to run our site.

September is National Car Seat Safety Month. If you would have asked me about car seat safety 2 years ago, I really had no idea.  It’s scary to me to think that I used to care for my nieces and a close friend’s child with no real knowledge about car seat safety. Thinking back to the things that I may have done, I’m thankful that nothing ever happened to them.

Thankfully, a met an amazing group of moms when I was pregnant who taught me all about the safety precautions that I needed to take to make sure that Skibbles is safe.  Maya Angelou’s quote has always remained with me, but even more since having a child– “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.”  Since learning everything I know about car seats, I have become somewhat of a car seat crazy mom, but it’s all in the spirit of hopefully helping!

So here’s 15 Things that I Didn’t Know About Car Seat Safety Before Having a Child:

1. Car Seats have expiration dates.
This isn’t a ploy to get you to spend more money.  It is very serious though and the plastic on both the car seat AND seat base can deteriorate over time. Also safety standards change every few years and this allows for you to be using the most up to date and safest seats available.
2. Extended Rear-facing.
Most people assume that one year is the automatic date for being able to turn your child from rear facing to forward facing, but the truth is that a child is 75% safer rear facing than forward facing.  SEVENTY-FIVE TIMES!! The AAP recommends that children be rear facing for a MINIMUM of 2 years OR until they reach their height/weight limits of their seat.  The best thing to do is to get a car seat with the longest height/weight combo to keep them rear facing as long as possible.
3. Chest clip at arm pit level.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves.  It’s called a chest clip.  Not a belly clip.  The chest clip should be above the nipple and right below arm pit level. See your car seat’s manual for an image.
4. Straps shouldn’t be loose – do the Pinch Test.
The harness should be tightly secured to the child.  To test slip a finger under the strap, if you can pinch the strap material, it’s too loose.
Bonus: The car seat base once installed also shouldn’t be able to move more than an inch side to side or front to back.
5. No bulky clothing. No bulky coats.  No Snowsuits!
This one is HUGE!  HUGE!  Are you listening!?  Fall and winter are coming and it’s going to be cold. OH NO! But don’t you dare put that puffy coat on your child under the harness straps. In the event of an accident, bulky coats compress and can actually eject your child from their seat.  Want to know if your coat is safe?  Put the child in their coat, then in their seat.  Adjust the straps to fit with the jacket on.  Then remove the child’s jacket and put them back into the seat without re-adjusting the straps.  If you can fit more than two fingers under the strap by the child’s shoulder bone, the jacket is not safe to use.   Instead, after putting the child in the seat, put a blanket on them, put their jacket on backwards, or buy a car seat poncho
6. No clipping onto top of shopping cart! NEVER EVER EVER!
Shopping carts say no seats on top.  Even if you “think” you hear it click, it’s never actually safe.  EVER.  The only place your car seat should be is on the floor, in the base, or on your stroller.  That’s it. This also goes for not placing on top of restaurant high chairs, beds, benches, tables, countertops, and more.  Seats can fall from these high surfaces and cause deadly consequences.
7. Seatbelt or anchors, not both
Whether you are forward facing or rear facing your child’s seat you should either be using the car’s seat belt OR the anchors.  They are both equally safe but not together.  Check both your car seat manual and your car’s manual to see what is recommended for your specific car seat.
8.  Convertible car seats have belt paths
There is one for forward and one rear facing and this makes a huge difference in safety, so please make sure your using the right one
9. Only soft toys should be kept in a car
I actually learned this in a college safety course about keeping your car safe for yourself and that any non-secure object can become a projectile in a car accident.  However, I never thought about it pertaining to children.  Toys should be soft in the event that a crash happens so more damage isn’t down.
10. Don’t be quick to move your child into a booster seat or out of a booster seat.
I can’t stress this enough.  I often see children in seats (or lack thereof) that they shouldn’t be in yet.  You child should remain in a 5-point harness as long as possible (this typically will be well into pre-school age) as this is the safest thing possible.  Once the weight and height limits are reach in a forward facing seat then a high back belt-positioning booster seat should be used. A child should not being using a seatbelt alone until they are 4 foot 9 inches, which typically happens between 8-12 years old.  Children under 13 should always ride in the back seat.
11. No extras– NO EXTRAS!
If it didn’t come standard with your car seat, then it’s not safe to use with your car seat!  No harness covers, no infant head supports, nothing that attaches to your seat.  All of these things alter the seat and can affect the fit, and in the event of a crash will void your manufacturers warranty. So just don’t do it.
12. No twisting straps
Twisted straps happen often, but it’s extremely important that they be fixed before driving away. Twisted straps don’t spread out the force of a crash like flat straps will can and they can actually cut into a child in the event that a crash does happen.
13. Even in fender benders, you should ask your car seat manufacturer and insurance company about replacement seats.
Typically if you can drive away from the crash site, no injuries to car occupants, and air bags didn’t deploy – your seat is probably safe.  However, if your insurance company will replace the seat, you should just go ahead and do it.  You never know if the inner working mechanisms have come loose, even in a simple fender bender, and in this case, it’s better to be safe than sorry later.
14.  Kids flying are safer in their car seats.
This was one I was completely unaware of at all.  However, not only is your child safer in their seat for safety purposes in the event of a plane crash, but this will also be safer while traveling once you reach your destination.  This is because you don’t know if rental car seats have ever been damaged or recalled, so you are safer to use your own.  Also, many rentals don’t have extended rear facing seats available.  Lastly, you never want to check your car seat into baggage claims because of the treatment of checked in often being shoved and pushed around.  Just don’t take the risk.
15.  Dispose of car seats properly.
If you are taking all these precautions already, great!  One last thing, when your seat does expire, or you need to replace it, make sure that you dispose of it properly.  Some parts can (and should) be recycled.  Contact your local recycling center to what can be recycled in your area.  For the rest of the seat, the strap webbing should be cut so others cannot use these seats improperly if found in a landfill.

So what are our recommendations?  We have both the Safety 1st 3-in-1 Elite Air 80 and a Diono Radian RXT .  We love them both and they both have extended rear facing options.  Skibbles seems to be more comfortable in the Safety 1st, but the Diono has a longer rear facing limit.

See our Safety 1st Elite Air 80 Review and our Diono Radian RXT Review.

3 out of 4 car seats are being used improperly.
Don’t be one of them!  Have your seat checked out today!

Berry Banana Cookie Milkshake #MyRocketShake

Raspberries. Bananas. Ice cream. Snickerdoodle cookies. Homemade whipped topping. Nutella. Seriously, what more could you want right? We were recent challenged by Johnny Rockets to come up with a milkshake recipe for National Milkshake Month in September.  This was the fourth attempt we did at a milkshake and it was to die for. Plus, we’re going to share five tips for making a better milkshake. So let’s get started.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:  We learned on 9/19/14 that we did in fact WIN this contest!  Thank you Johnny Rockets!

We like being difficult so we made our own homemade caramelized banana berry ice cream. If you don’t have the patience for this I would suggest splitting half and half raspberry and banana ice cream. But really, I highly recommend you making this ice cream. The result is incredible and will have you and your guests begging for me.  Plus, it’s kid approved! What’s not to love about that!

There’s a few different components to this ice cream — caramelizing the bananas, the actual ice cream, the raspberry puree, and then the milkshake.  It may sound like a lot but I promise it’s 100% worth it.

How to make the ice cream:

Ingredients:

Caramelized Bananas
3 ripe bananas, sliced into pieces
1/3 cup Brown sugar, packed
1 tbsp Unsalted butter, cut into pieces
Nutmeg

Ice Cream
4 eggs yolks
1 3/4 cup Whole milk
3 cups Heavy cream
1 2/3 cup organic sugar
Vanilla

Raspberry Puree
1 lb fresh raspberries

Directions:

Raspberry Puree
Put raspberries through a sieve to remove all seeds and make a puree. Set aside.

Caramelized Bananas
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.  In a baking dish combine all ingredients for caramelized bananas and bake for 40 minutes, turning once halfway through. Remove from oven and place contents in a blender.

Ice Cream
Whisk 4 eggs yolks in a small bowl and set aside. In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, combine milk, heavy cream, and sugar.  Cook until sugar dissolves completely.  Slowly, whisk in 1/2 cup warmed milk mixture to the egg yolks, making sure to whisk constantly to temper the eggs.  Then add the egg mixture slowly back into the milk mixture.  Heat on medium low until thick (coat the back of a spoon).  Add milk mixture to blender with bananas and blend until combined.  Set in a bowl of ice water for 20 minutes until cooled.  Once cooled, add in 1/8 teaspoon vanilla and 1 cup raspberry puree.  Cover and place in fridge for four hours or preferably overnight.  Follow directions on your ice cream maker to make the ice cream.

How to make the milkshake:

Ingredients:
2 cups banana berry ice cream, softened (about 3 scoops), recipe above
1/8 cup milk (more to desired thinness)
1/2 cup frozen snickerdoodle cookies
Homemade Whipped Topping
Raspberry purée, recipe above
Nutella, melted
Additional cookies for topping, crumbled

Directions:
Add ice cream, milk, and cookies to a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into chilled glass. Top with whipped cream, melted nutella, raspberry purée and crumbled cookies. Add straw (or not) and enjoy.

Hope you enjoy!!

VTech Kidizoom® Smartwatch

*Disclosure: Affiliate links may be contained in this post. We receive a small commission for purchases and thank you for helping us continue to run our site.

Welcome to the VTech Kidizoom® Smartwatch

Our friend’s at Momma Lew’s Blog recently had the chance to test out one of VTech’s brand new products – The VTech Kidizoom® Smartwatch and we wanted to share her thoughts her with those of you that may have older children!

Here’s her thoughts:
With so many kid’s electronics on the market today, it can be hard to figure out which ones are the best for your child. I won’t lie, I have gone through my fair share of products, even with doing extensive research. There is one brand though that has never let me down – . Our InnoTab is constantly being fought over between my two children ages 3 & 5.

Why we are loving the VTech Kidizoom® Smartwatch.:
  • My son can easily take photos,
  • Add photo effects like frames, filters and distortions.
  • Record his own videos,
  • He can play 1 of the 4 built-in games or I can download more for him in VTech’s Learning Lodge
  • The 1.4″ color touch screen is perfect for little fingers and is so easy to use.
  • There are no complicated directions or anything to read – perfect for non-readers.
  • Telling time is a hard skill for children to learn and the Kidizoom makes it easy with 50 digital & analog clock displays.
  • There are no batteries to buy or replace – recharges right through a USB port.
  • There’s also an alarm clock and stop watch.
  • The voice recorder is fun to use to create 5 different fun effects.
  • While you cannot submerge the watch in a pool or bath, it is splash and sweat proof making it perfect for your child to wear everyday.
  • Like other V-Tech products I have, the Kidizoom is very durable for the wear and tear that kids put on their toys and electronic devices.
VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch

Our thoughts on the VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch: While the watch is recommended for ages 4+, my 3 year old who is advanced for her age had a lot of trouble figuring it out. My son, at the age of 5, I think is the perfect age to start to use the watch. It’s really opened up a world of creativity for him. I’ve noticed that the camera is thought out to where he doesn’t need to lift and steady his arms at the same time of pressing any buttons. The camera is quite clear too. I’ve noticed that since using the Kidizoom, my son enjoys playing more imaginative games with his toys again. Believe it or not, this electronic device has gotten him off of other electronic devices and back to the basics of playing with cars, action heroes and more. He has been making up little videos of him playing with them or of the toys playing.

VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch

Some criticism on the VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch:

The battery takes about 3 hours to fully charge, which in the world of a child is a very long time. But, I have found when it is fully charged, the Kidizoom Smartwatch is able to be played with for a day or more. Also, the storage space is very minimal. If you know children and cameras, they just click away without a thought or censor. So, the storage does fill up very fast and my son becomes frustrated. I have to plug it in, download the pictures (which is a very easy process) and free up some space for him.

The VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch retails for $59.99 and comes in 4 fun kid-friendly colors – blue, pink, white and green.
