Banana Bread Breakfast Smoothie

November 17, 2016 by Andrew Leave a Comment

banana-bread-breakfast-smoothie-2

Is it just me or do you also feel too busy to try and figure out breakfast!? It’s like almost an inconvenience in the morning. You wake up with so many questions…

  • What’s the weather?
  • Where is the remote?
  • Which new channel do I like?
  • What am I going to wear?
  • What do I have to do when I get to work?
  • What do I have to do before I leave?

WAIT…. the kids….

  • Did they say the weather yet?
  • What am I putting on the kids?
  • Why are they crying?
  • Where is your shoes?
  • Why is your sister screaming?
  • Why do you want leftover pizza at 6am?

DARN IT!? WHAT IS THE WEATHER!!??

At this point, you have to head out the door in 5 minutes and adding one more task would make you feel like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. So you take off with nothing in your stomach but 2 1/2 slices of pepperoni from that leftover pizza your daughters were eating.

If this is you, put your hand up! (my hand is so high in the air right now)

Solution? Well, if you’re looking for the weather, then use your smart phone. As for breakfast…..

This Banana Bread Breakfast Smoothie is 100% the solution.

Breakfast is a must for numerous reasons, but I’m not here to preach to you. This banana bread breakfast smoothie will be one of those CONVENIENT solutions to such an everyday hassle.

With our Banana Bread Breakfast Smoothie I am able to make it the night before. I shove everything in the a container (or in our ninja blender cup) and refrigerate overnight. In the morning I go to the kitchen first and instead of starting coffee and walking away, I toss it in a blender and hang there for the few seconds it takes to blend.

This smoothie has such a great taste, your body can’t resist the urge to do the “Ju Ju”.

The smoothie is not titled “banana bread” because it sounds cool. It means comfort food and this is a comfort smoothie (my phrase I’m coining it)! The kids put the smoothie to bed quicker then their cold pizza! Everyone loves the taste.

And if you need another reason to try it, wouldn’t believe how much protein is in this bad boy if I told you. Well, believe it because I’m telling you. It’s packed with over 34 grams of NATURAL protein. Yes! Lean body I keep throwing pennies in the fountains for, HERE I COME (…don’t judge me)!

Keep in mind this Banana Bread Breakfast Smoothie is not only for breakfast. I usually use it to help me get my day started, but when I am looking for a meal replacement or an after workout shake, this smoothie is it.

Folks, thank you reading, try it out and tell me what you think in the comments below.

Pina Colada Smoothie

June 13, 2016 by Larisha Campbell 1 Comment

pina colada smoothie recipe

Summer time, for me, has always meant that I can run on less and less food. It’s just too hot or I’m too occupied to eat. I’ve found that is similarly true for my toddler (the baby is just a constant garbage disposal always). However, she’s a growing toddler, and I know the importance of making sure that she’s getting the proper nutrition to support her growing body. I have found that I am able to put almost anything in a smoothie for her and she will drink it up, no matter the time of day, what we are doing, or how hot it is outside.  Put extra ice in it and she thinks it’s ice cream. And I don’t even feel bad for letting her think that. We also loves putting them into ice pops molds and making deliciously healthy ice pops too.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Smoothie Bowl

Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jelly Smoothie Bowl

When smoothie bowls became all the rage, I’ll admit, I didn’t get it. Who wanted to add another step when you can just stick the straw in the cup and start drinking.  But I took one for the team and tried it out anyway.  What I found is that it made not only a delicious breakfast option, but it also make for a sweet late night treat that you could feel great about. Most importantly though, my toddler, Skibbles, thought these things were amazing and I found a way to get more fruits and veggies into her.  Even the baby loves these. I like to imagine them as being ice cream since they are thicker than a smoothie, and then what I add on top is essentially my ice cream toppings, so the possibilities are endless.

We’re sharing today our girls’ favorite smoothie bowl – a Peanut Butter and Jelly smoothie bowl.  I feel like PB&J is the epitome of childhood. I know that Andrew and I both enjoy eating sandwiches still, but we both feel better about the ingredients when making a healthy smoothie bowl instead of the bread and sugary jelly.  What’s great about this is that we use strawberries for the “jelly” aspect which makes it pink and if there’s one thing I’ve learned from having a toddler is that she will eat anything pink.

I was excited to try out JIF’s new Peanut Powder and Dannon’s new Oikos Triple Zero Vanilla Greek Yogurt for this recipe as well. The JIF Peanut Powder is literally just peanuts, nothing else added, which, as a mom, I was insanely excited about. It also has 85% less fat than traditional store bought peanut butters, making this even better for you. The Dannon Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt has 0 fat, 0 added sugar and 0 artificial sweeteners, plus 15g of protein for every 5.3oz. While is does not mean it’s a low calorie food, it is quite possibly the perfect protein snack™!

JIF PB Powder smoothie Bowl

We started by chopping up our peanuts and thinly slicing our strawberries to go on top of the smoothie bowl.

Next, we blended all our ingredients into our blender. If you are looking for a new blender, check out this Oster® Blend-N-Go® MyBlend®! Just Fill, Blend & GO!

Once blended, we poured that into our bowl.

The thick and delicious blended smoothie is the base for your smoothie bowl.

Then it’s time to add your toppings.  When making smoothie bowls, the toppings possibilities are endless, but I really love trying to enhance our protein components going into here.

So we used the chopped peanuts, chia seeds, and then the sliced fresh strawberries.

We topped it with more peanut butter powder to make that flavor really shine through.

The end result is simply to die for.  Anytime we make this one, Skibbles wakes up the next day and asks for it again.  Of course, we keep making it because why wouldn’t I want her to have all this healthy and deliciousness going into her growing body!  Yum!

Coconut Cashew Strawberry Banana Smoothie

March 28, 2016 by Larisha Campbell 4 Comments

coconut cashew strawberry banana smoothie

This coconut cashew strawberry banana smoothie may be our family’s newest favorite flavor combination. Slightly nutty + slightly sweet + a bit like an original classic, it’s guaranteed to be a hit.

I’ve always loved smoothies myself, but must admit that up until the last few years most of my smoothies weren’t very exciting.  Strawberry Banana, Berries and citrus, strawberry and pineapple…that was pretty much the sum of my smoothie experimentation.  Once I had Skibbles and she started eating more, I got a little more adventurous after realizing that I could pretty much put anything in a smoothie and she would eat it that way. Coincidently, I would also eat pretty much anything put into a smoothie I found out. Thus, our love and adventure of smoothies began. We experiment all the time and daddy actually came up with the recipe for this one, but Skibbles loves it!

mini chef mondays smoothie

She is just getting into “girly” things like her doll house and princesses, so she loves pink smoothies. Lucky for Andrew and I, this smoothie is loaded with great nutrients and lots of protein, so we are happy to let her have it as often as she wants too.

The other amazing thing about smoothies is that she can easy make this herself for the most part.  I typically pre-measure things out for her, but other than that she’s on her own. She loves pushing the buttons on our blender.  It’s such a feeling of accomplishment for her! The facial expressions she makes are enough to light up any room, am I right?

Coconut Cashew Strawberry Banana Smoothie
Author: Larisha Campbell
Ingredients
  • 8-10 strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup cashews
  • 1/4 cup coconut flakes
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/8 cup chia seeds
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
Instructions
  1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend until well combined.
  3. Pour and serve.

I’d encourage you to not only try this smoothie, but if you are having trouble getting fruits or veggies into your little ones, to try it in a smoothie form.  Berries can mask a lot of flavors and things like sweet potatoes or carrots have a sweet enough taste to help with flavor too.  Leave a comment below and let me know your favorite smoothie combo!

Fruit Smoothie Recipe -Great for Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and Beyond

October 5, 2012 by Larisha Campbell 8 Comments

One thing has been very clear during my pregnancy.  Morning times are sometimes the hardest for eating purposes. I always eat breakfast, I know the importance of it; however, many times throughout my pregnancy, the thought of certain food (eggs) make me cringe.  One thing that I have always enjoyed though is making fruit smoothies. It fills me up, is amazingly healthy, and gives the baby so many great nutrients.  This fruit smoothie recipe is amazing, packed full of flavor, and nutrients making it perfect for pregnancy.

Recipe:
1 medium banana
1 orange
5 strawberries
1 Chobani Greek Yogurt (I used peach flavored for this)
1/2 cup Silk Fruit & Protein juice (I used strawberry banana flavor)
5 pieces of ice

Directions:
Throw everything into a blender. Blend on high until well mixed. Add more ice or juice as necessary to reach desired consistency (ice will make thicker, juice with make thinner).

Tips:
**One great thing about smoothies is that you can change them to taste like whatever you want.  Change the yogurt flavor, add different fruits, use OJ instead of the Silk juice.  It’s really up to you!  Enjoy!
**If you are breastfeeding and have eliminated dairy due to allergies, the silk fruit juice is dairy free!  Just remove the yogurt, and add some more fruit!
