Homemade BBQ Sauce

May 19, 2024 by Larisha Campbell 9 Comments

This homemade BBQ sauce recipe is quick and easy to make. You’ll never want to buy another bottle of Barbecue sauce when you realize how to make BBQ sauce is so easy.

homemade bbq sauce

You may be wondering why you should make your own homemade BBQ sauce when it seems cheaper and easier to just buy at the store.
The truth is, your taste buds deserve it.
Now, while it CAN be more expensive, it doesn’t have to be.  And yes it is faster to buy at the store, but this recipe isn’t complicated and a child older than 2 can definitely help whisk all this together at the end.
The real focus though is that:
  • You never have to worry about running out – it’s always available to make at home
  • You know exactly what ingredients are going into it
  • It tastes SO MUCH BETTER than ANYTHING store bought
So if you’re ready to make your taste buds happy then you’re in the right place. Also, after we make, we store in glass containers in the fridge.

How can you make Homemade BBQ Sauce?

A homemade BBQ sauce recipe isn’t difficult.

The base is ketchup. Use a salt-free ketchup for even lower sodium. You mix in apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, and maple syrup. The apple cider vinegar helps aid in the sweetness that is being heightened with the other sweeteners.

Then, to give that savory taste of the best BBQ sauce you’ve tried, you add in spices.  We add in garlic and onion powders, smoked paprika, black pepper, chili powder, and ground cinnamon.

Stir everything together and you’re done.  This easy BBQ sauce is so simple that you’ll wonder why you haven’t done it before.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Burger (Vegan Option)

May 3, 2019 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

Don’t question the combination! You must try this Peanut Butter and Jelly Burger! The unlikely pairing will have you wondering why you never tried this peanut butter and jelly recipe before!

I know what you’re thinking.  Peanut Butter and Jelly Burger? I’ve officially lost my daggone mind.  Who in the world pairs a burger and peanut butter and jelly sandwich together. You may be thinking I’ve gone off my rocker as my great-grandma would say. But just hear me out, okay?

First, you may be partly correct about loosing my mind. Being a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom who runs a business is already partly insane. But this peanut butter and jelly burger recipe is not one of those mind-loosing moments.

peanut butter and jelly burger recipe

A few years ago, we did a Chew Philly Food Tour in Manayunk, PA. One of the stops was at a restaurant called Lucky’s Last Chance and the tasting there was of an award-winning peanut butter and jelly burger.

Andrew, being the very picky one in the relationship, said there was no way he was trying it when we got there. I was sort of weirded out, but I’m pretty open to at least trying new things.

Fast forward, and we actually all did try it and loved it.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Burger Recipe

We loved it so much that we decided to recreate it. The burger recipe at Lucky’s was made with a creamy peanut butter, white American cheese, bacon, and served with grape jelly on the side. They describe the peanut butter and jelly burger as an unexpectedly delicious childhood favorite with an adult twist and they couldn’t be more accurate.

This delicious burger recipe combine a seeded bun with peanut butter and jelly, burgers, cheese, and bacon. We really love to use pepper flavored bacon or any type of maple flavored bacon.  Really thick cuts of bacon work great with this recipe.

I’m having guests over, one who is plant based/vegan, how can I make this recipe for them?

Obviously grape jelly and peanut butter are usually vegan friendly.  It’s pretty easy to find a vegan hamburger bun, so you’re on the way to starting to have a meal that everyone can enjoy.  For the patty, you can try purchasing a plant based meat patty like Beyond Meat or even Aldi’s plant based version.  Our favorite dairy free cheese is Violife or Chao.  There are also vegan bacon brands like Litelife.   Once you make these few simple swaps. you can have a meal for everyone.

What sides should I serve with a Peanut Butter and Jelly Burger?

There are endless possibilities of what you should serve with burgers.  Here are some of our favorite things:

  • The Best Homemade French Fries
  • Spicy Corn on the Cob
  • Zesty Pasta Salad
  • Roasted Asparagus with Mushrooms
  • Broccoli Tater Tots

Beefless Vegan Stew

February 18, 2019 by Larisha Campbell 2 Comments

This vegan stew recipe will blow you away. Super hearty and filling and perfect for any cold day.  Even the biggest carnivore will love this chickpea vegan beef stew recipe! This recipe is Top 8 Allergen Friendly, including gluten free.

When we first went vegan/plant based, there was a lot of confusion.  What in the world did we eat?  For many people considering a plant based eating lifestyle, that is used to eating mainstream “traditional” meals, the thought alone is daunting. Many people assume that people who live a lifestyle like this just eat platefuls of broccoli and bowls of strawberries. While that may sometimes be true, the truth of the matter is that people who eat vegan or plant based eat a lot of traditional meals with small dietary changes.  Take this beefless vegan stew for example.  It’s just as hearty and filling as any traditional beef stew recipes; however, it’s just made without the beef. Even carnivores will love this vegan hearty soup recipe.

What ingredients do you need to make this beefless vegan stew?

When making this chickpea stew recipe, you are going to 15 ingredients for it to all come together.  Many of these ingredients are vegetables in this beefless vegan stew recipe. The ingredients that you need are:

  • Chickpeas
  • Carrots
  • Yellow Onion
  • Garlic
  • Celery
  • Potatoes
  • Corn
  • Peas
  • Crushed Tomatoes
  • Tomato Paste
  • Rosemary
  • Bay Leaves
  • Coconut Aminos (Can sub soy sauce or tamari)
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Vegetable Stock
  • Salt and Pepper

These are the ingredients that will make you the perfect bowl of hearty beefless vegan stew.

How do you make beefless vegan stew?

In order to make this chickpea stew recipe, you will start by chopping up all our your vegetables. Once your vegetables are chopped, add all the ingredients into a crockpot except for the peas and corn. Cook on low for 7-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.  15 minutes before serving, stir in your corn and peas.  Remove bay leaves and then serve.

After you are finished, store any remaining beefless vegan stew in an air tight container. It will last in the fridge 5-7 days.

Can I make this beefless vegan stew not in a crockpot?

Maybe you don’t have a crockpot or you want to make this beefless stew recipe in a shorter amount of time.  While we highly recommend slow cooking to allow the flavors to really develop and come together, there’s no reason you can’t make this recipe on the stove.  Start by reducing the amount of liquid by 1 cup. In a large pot or dutch oven, place all the ingredients together and cook for 30-45 minutes on low.  Your potatoes and carrots should be fork tender.  If you have more time, you can continue to let it cook on low for more time.

What other recipes pair well with this beefless vegan stew?

While this vegan stew recipe is perfectly delicious all on it’s on, some people love having sandwiches or other sides with their soup. Here’s some delicious sides that we think would pair nicely with this beefless vegan stew recipe.

  • Sliced Vegan Bread (slice and spread with vegan butter)
  • Vegan Garlic Bread
  • Crunchy Kale Chips
  • Vegan Spinach Pesto Grilled Cheese
  • Fried Plantains
  • Vegan Tuna Salad Sandwich
  • Vegan Burgers

20+ Tried and True 30 Minute Meals

October 17, 2018 by Larisha Campbell 4 Comments

These easy 30 minute meals have been tried and tested! No more guess work if you can actually make 30 minute meals, we’ve got more than 20 here for you!

As parents, there’s no time for 30 minute meals that actually take forever.  You know the ones. You find one of those super delicious-looking, cheap, healthy 30 minute meals on line, save it to Pinterest and then when you actually go to make it, the meal ends up taking over an hour. Why? Because the directions say you should already have everything pre-chopped, pre-cooked, and pre-made.

That’s not realistic for anyone. Most people, not all, but most, are not buying pre-chopped everything.

Luckily, I’m taking the guess work out of whether recipes are really 30 minute meals.

Over the past 6 months, I have been doing a LIVE video series on our Facebook page called Will It Work Wednesdays. Every Wednesday, we take another bloggers recipe that says it’s a 30 minute meal and then test it out. Our goal with these are to see if they are really 30 minutes or less meals. All types of parents need these quick 30 minute meals in their meal plans for days that life gets really crazy (which is almost everyday right?).

The great news is that we’ve tested over 20 recipes now and they have all worked out to be 30 minute meals. Some closer than others, some way under.  But all of them are 30 minute meals recipes. So today, we are compiling them all together in one easy to read post for you. Included in the post is the links to the recipe and the video so you too can make these 30 minutes or less meals.

Recipes are sorted by categories and if they fall into more than one category, they will be included in both.

Slow Cooker BBQ Parmesan Pork Loin

September 18, 2018 by Larisha Campbell 6 Comments

This Slow Cooker BBQ Parmesan Pork Loin is one of the easiest, but most flavorful easy dinner recipes that you can throw together!

Being a parent means that every night, there are little ones that need fed. It’s a never-ending cycle and while we all love our kids dearly, having to physically make someone three meals a days, does get exhausting.  Especially, I’m sure if you don’t like to cook to being with.
When I first had our daughter, my idea of cooking meals consisted of some cans or jars, a few boxes, and a lot of hope. We quickly realized we didn’t want to eat a lot of processed foods for our children and because of that, it meant that I needed to get better with cooking.
One of the biggest things that helped me was being able to find super flavorful meals, like this Slow Cooker BBQ Parmesan Pork Loin, that could not only feed us multiple meals, but also were easy to throw together.  One of the reasons I love our slow cooker so much is that I am able to throw everything inside of it early in the morning and then by the end of the day dinner is completely ready.  The meals, whether making meat or a soup, are always so tender and it feels like the flavors have more of a chance to really merry together.

What Ingredients Do You Need To Make Slow Cooker BBQ Parmesan Pork Loin

In order to make this slow cooker pork loin recipe, you are going to need the following ingredients. Of course, the entire recipe and cooking instructions are below if you scroll down a bit more.

  • Pork Loin
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Honey
  • Olive Oil
  • Dried Basil
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt

What Sides Go With Slow Cooker BBQ Parmesan Pork Loin

Of course, you could eat this entirely on it’s own. It’s so delicious. However, you probably want some sides to go along with your easy pork loin recipe.

  • Honey Glazed Carrots
  • Air Fryer Baked Potato
  • Lemon Butter Green Beans
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • BBQ Asparagus
  • Spicy Garlic Corn on the Cob
  • Easy Coleslaw
  • Zesty Pasta Salad
  • German Style Potato Salad

What to Make With Leftover Slow Cooker BBQ Parmesan Pork Loin

One of the biggest things when making such a large piece of meat for us is that we often have a lot leftover. No one really likes the same meal over and over again, so often you make wonder what to make with leftover pork loin.  This is also a great way to knock two or more dinners out of the way. Simply purchase a larger pork loin than the recipes calls for and double the sauce.  Then, you can use the leftover pork loin for multiple meals throughout the week.  Some of our favorite leftover pork loin recipes are:

  • Pork Fajitas
  • Easy Pork Ramen
  • Pork Tacos

Of course, one really simple idea is just to shred the pork tenderloin pieces, add in some more homemade bbq sauce and make pulled bbq sandwiches. Easy peasy!

Meatball Sliders

June 1, 2018 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

This Meatball Sliders recipe is a huge hit with the kids and ready to go in under an hour! Try this delicious Meatball Sliders recipe today!

Disclosure: This post has been sponsored by Thrive Algae Oil. Thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

At every get together growing up, my aunt would make these delicious homemade meatballs. It was one of the ways my mother could guarantee that I was going to get protein into my body on a busy day with family. They were amazing and it’s always one of the first recipes that I learned how to make. To this day, I still make them and I still love them.

But today, making them means something more. Today, the memories I hope to have with my beloved family recipe, is not my own, but rather, exciting memories of family favorite recipes into my own children. Luckily, I’ve succeeded with this recipe.  Both of our girls love these meatballs. So much so that they ask for seconds.

A New Spin on a Family Favorite

Meatballs are great by themselves (obviously) or put on top or rice or onto a roll. However, meatballs subs are hard for little kids to eat and putting on top of rice isn’t easy when you’re on the move (especially if you have to eat in the car). Today, we’re transforming our family favorite meatballs into a delicious and fun recipe for the whole family – Meatball Sliders! Not only are they a family friendly recipe, but it’s a crowd please and easy to eat on the run. Try them for your next get together or upcoming sports night!

How to Make Meatball Sliders

We start with the basics of our homemade meatball recipe. If you don’t have time, feel free to use large store bought meatballs. Once you form the ingredients into meatballs, then it’s time to get them cooking. We’ve opted to cook the meatballs in New! Thrive Algae Oil. Once the meatballs are cooked, we add spaghetti sauce to the skillet and cook for a few more minutes. Once that sauce is well incorporated with the meatballs, we start making our meatball sliders. We layer mozzarella cheese on top of slider buns with a little more sauce and one meatball. Once layered, we brush an herbed butter mixture on top of the buns and then cook for 12 minutes.  Then done! Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

What is Thrive Algae Oil?

I know you guys caught that little tidbit in how to make them and your first thought was what is Algae Oil!? Luckily, I’m here to tell you today! Thrive® Algae Oil is an everyday cooking oil that is made from algae and has the highest level of monounsaturated fat (the good fat!) compared to any other cooking oil available. Plus, it has the lowest level of saturated fats (the bad ones!). Swapping out sources of saturated fat for sources of monounsaturated fat, such as Thrive, helps maintain heart health. Additionally, it has a super high smoke point of up to 485 degrees, so you can really turn up the heat.  And lastly, taste. I know you’re all wondering about this. Thrive® Algae Oil actually is a very light, neutral oil, so the food really shines without taking on the taste of the oil.

Ultimate Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese

May 11, 2018 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

This Ultimate Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese sandwich recipe is the perfect lunch or dinner sandwich for the whole family! Stack it super high or make a smaller version for the best grilled cheese recipe!

I can’t really pinpoint an exact time that I fell in love with pulled pork, but as a mom, it’s one of my favorite meals.  We alternate between pulled pork and pulled chicken, so feel free to substitute either of these meats in this recipe. We make a slow cooker pulled pork recipe with our homemade BBQ sauce which is one reason I love it so much.

My time as a mom, is limited. Even as a stay-at-home mom, I work from home and I homeschool, so we have a lot going on every day.  I’m constantly on the go and making lists and being able to throw dinner in the crockpot in the morning in under 10 minutes and have it ready at dinner, is a HUGE win for me.

Making a Gourmet Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese

Our gourmet pulled pork grilled cheese sandwich has a large combination of toppings. Think of this as a recipe that you would see served at a fun restaurant. Together, this sandwich works magically together. However, we understand that this may be unrealistic or to large for most people (especially littles).  Feel free to alter it however you need.

What toppings go on an ultimate pulled pork grilled cheese:

  • pulled pork
  • mac and cheese
  • onion rings
  • bacon
  • ham
  • pineapple
  • lettuce
  • smoked gouda slices
  • cream cheese

Clearly, once you start piling these toppings on, you have a giant sandwich. It’s fun to eat though! You can make homemade pulled pork by following our homemade pulled chicken recipe and just sub the chicken for the same amount of pork tenderloin. Use your favorite mac and cheese recipe and then layer everything else between two slices of cooked, garlic texas toast. After that, throw in a skillet with a pat of melted butter and grilled until golden brown on both sides! Voila! Perfect pulled pork grilled cheese sandwich!

Best Side Dishes for Pulled Pork

  • Homemade French Fries (Try dipping them in our Honey Mustard BBQ Sauce)
  • Easy Coleslaw
  • Southern Style Potato Salad
  • Macaroni Salad
  • Slow Cooker Baked Beans
  • BBQ Pasta Salad with Tuna

Monte Cristo Grilled Cheese Sandwich

May 10, 2018 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

Our Monte Cristo Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a fun play on a traditional french Monte Cristo recipe. Try this delicious monte cristo sandwich and tell us if it’s not one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches you’ve had.

The first time I ever saw a Monte Cristo sandwich, I was with my sister. We were at a restaurant together when she ordered one and when it came out, I was confused. There was meat and cheese on her sandwich but it was topped with powdered sugar and she told me the sauce was raspberry. After the disgusted look on my face, she made me try it anyway. It was in that moment that I learned the amazingness that is a monte cristo sandwich.

I knew when we were creating our grilled cheese sandwich series that a monte cristo grilled cheese sandwich had to be one of them. It’s such a fun recipe for the entire family. The kids think it’s amazing that we give them powdered sugar on a sandwich. I think the first time we made them, the girls lost we had gone off our rockers.

What is a Monte Cristo Sandwich?

Before we get into our monte cristo grilled cheese sandwich, let’s first discuss what is a monte cristo sandwich. A classic Monte cristo recipe is a fried ham and cheese sandwich.  It was a play on the French croque-monsieur which is a baked ham and cheese sandwich. Some people now use other meats in addition to the ham and it may or may not be fried.  It’s topped with powdered sugar and served with a raspberry sauce.

What sides do you serve with a Monte Cristo Grilled Cheese sandwich?

  • Homemade French Fries (Try dipping them in our Honey Mustard BBQ Sauce)
  • Easy Coleslaw
  • Cheesy Broccoli and Rice Casserole
  • Corn on the Cob
  • Broccoli Tater Tots
  • Seasoned Rice
  • 4 cheese mac and cheese

Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese Sandwich

May 9, 2018 by Larisha Campbell Leave a Comment

Combine the best of Philly into one ultimate sandwich! A Philly Cheesesteak and a Philly Soft Pretzel collide to create the best Philly cheesesteak recipe – the Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese Sandwich!

Growing up, we had cheesesteaks occasionally.  My dad would pull out these frozen sheets of meats and quickly whip them up until something delicious came of it. Or so I thought at the time. I always thought they were yummy, but I never got the hype of “The Philly Cheesesteak”. I mean…Don’t get me wrong, they’re good, but not something that you have to be known for if you’re one of the biggest cities in the country.

Then…I  moved…

A few years ago, Andrew and I moved to New Jersey. Well, he moved back, I moved here for the first time. One of the first places we explored together was South Street in Philly. He took me to Jim’s and it wasn’t until that moment that I got the hype. What I had grown up used to as a Philly Cheesesteak was NOTHING in comparison to the real thing.

Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches are now a favorite in our home, not only for Andrew and I, but for our children as well. We knew when we were discussing our grilled cheese sandwich series that we had to do a spin on a Philly Cheesesteak. In our opinion, this may be the best Philly cheesesteak recipe that you can make at home. It’s such a fun spin on a family favorite! The entire family will love this Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese sandwich.

What are the ingredients on a Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese?

We wanted to combine two Philly favorites – the Philly Cheesesteak and the Philly Pretzel to create this insanely delicious Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese sandwich. We use a pretzel hot dog bun that we found at our local Amish market for the bun. It resembles a traditional cheesesteak bun, with the same delicious taste of a Philly pretzel. If you can’t find buns locally to you, then you can create your own pretzel buns at home or slice a soft pretzel in half for a close alternative.

Then, we seared up onions and ribeye steak in the traditional Philly way, added grilled red, green, and yellow peppers, and finally used both provolone and American cheese.  We skipped the whiz, but if you are a whiz traditionalist, feel free to add it to your Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese sandwich!

What are good sides dishes for Philly Cheesesteaks?

  • Homemade French Fries (Try dipping them in our Honey Mustard BBQ Sauce)
  • Coleslaw
  • Beer Battered Onion Rings
  • Potato Salad with Bacon
  • Four Cheese Mac & Cheese
